This week we celebrate the work our wonderful Occupational Therapists do.

Our OT team is lead by Principal Laura who has an evidence based approach and sound clinical experience that she brings to our team to nurture them and mentor them to strive for clinical excellence.

She leads our team comprising of:
👉 Jaime: a little pocket rocket who works across all 3 arms of our business. Inspirational manual handling trainer, complex home mods credentialled, solid understanding of complex AT prescription and skills development.
👉 Sharmaine: also a little pocket rocket! Sharmaine is understanding and really connects with those she supports. Attention to detail and sound understanding of the NDIS, she has supported many individuals through complex challenges through skills development, prescribing AT and home mods and various versions of FCA reports and AAT support.
👉 Melissa: The newest member of our OT team but comes from a significant background in rehab and over a decade and a half of working with individuals with complex physical presentations. Solid understanding of prescribing AT, home mods and writing FCAs- Melissa is a valued member of our team.
👉 Angus: termed as one of the two “gentle giants” in our team, Angus connects on a meaningful level with individuals and really understands the intricacies of their needs to write up and prescribe evidence based interventions and communicate thoroughly with support networks.
👉 Aidan: the second “gentle giant” in our team! Aidan has an interest in home mods and is often found fishing with clients for skills development- thinks outside of the box! Aidan’s ability to apply the ndis framework to successfully gain necessary supports for individuals is outstanding and he is constantly learning how to upskill.

Hats off to the wonderful Occupational Therapists in the community and a big acknowledgement to those within our team that we value greatly ❤️❤️❤️

What is that - ONE week wait to see one of our experienced clinicians?!?
Rarely do we have this on our books for our Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy team.

If you haven't worked with our team before - we are a team of highly skilled clinicians with effective ability to work tirelessly with complex clinical presentations within the challenges of the NDIS framework.
We have a brand new fit out in Mawson Lakes for clinic based appointments (if travel time is eating into your NDIS plan) and we provide the mobile based service for those who prefer us to come to you.
We have a highly experienced Senior team who oversees everything that is developed within our team for precise qulality control and have a very high standard for collation of evidence and how to embed that within our reports.

NDIS registered and well known in our community - ask around for reviews or feel free to reach out and meet us for yourself.

Reach out to our Senior Team or Therapy Coordinators on 1300 661 670, our books usually fill very quickly when we do these posts!

Probably one of the hardest health conditions as it’s often so hard for others to see and be made aware something is wrong.

Even more so when an individual does not present as neurotypical as they are more likely to be masking their true emotions to fit into the world around them. Or be unable to effectively express them- leading to further deterioration of their mental health.

Regardless if there’s a “day” or “month”, dedicated to awareness, regardless of someone may be struggling or not…. you only live once so be kind, do what makes you happy, surround yourself with those on them same alignment who strengthen and support each other. Appreciate yourself and those around you, practice appreciating great fullness, be mindful, listen to your body and learn about the importance of breath work.

Our team have undergone a tremendous amount of training to better be able to support those with mental health challenges, although we are not an acute mental health service, supporting those with mental health conditions makes up about 80-90% of the comorbid health conditions that our team support. It is so important to understand the complexities of how such conditions can be amplified when an individual has a disability, however when we are all aware- we can start to unravel the challenges together and work towards strengthening the many emotional and physical pillars that make up your unique foundation.

We will be contacting those we support that have been prescribed one of these but please, if you own and use a smart drive please reach out to the supplier you purchased your wheelchair from or please let us know and we can assist you to connect with Permobil.
The smart watch to the smart drive can become overwhelmed and fail to shut off the smart drive motor when multiple apps are working, which can lead to the smart drive continuing forward beyond your control.
Incredibly dangerous so please urgently seek support to have this defect corrected.Do you use a SmartDrive PushTracker E2 or E3 watch? If so, please follow the below link for information regarding an Urgent Product Defect Correction that we need your immediate attention for.

I was asked by an individual yesterday, where my passion comes from as a clinician. It was a hard one to describe, but today I think I understand how to describe the same feeling.

When we work with clients, our goal isn’t to “fix them”, it’s to empower them to grow the version of themselves that they want to be. Like gardening, we would help to work out which seed to plant in the environment in which it will grow (what goals to work on in the circumstances at present), we would show them how to nurture the seed with water and nutrients (work on sub goals and show the individual concepts and parameters so they can work on it themselves between therapy) and then one day the flower might BLOOM.

This is where our passion comes from, the blooming of smiles, laughter, seeing the client proud of themselves! It’s the sense of empowerment what we can provide that gives us passion when the individuals we support learn to grow the version of themselves that they strive to be 🥰

How’s this for an accessible play space! 7 out of 8 play spaces are accessible for wheelchair users, wide flat pathways, 50% accessible carparks, a hoist and change table in the public restroom with automated 1200mm door (yes you heard that right!!! 👏), rear tilt in space harnessed flying fox and swing, sensory spaces and the list goes on.

Kudos to the designer- well thought out ❤️ we need more options like this in Adelaide! (Unfortunately this one is in the Sunshine Coast where the director is visiting).

What a busy time it has been in our practice! We can almost announce some exciting news which might involve a bigger Mawson Lakes location and a purpose fit out for a number of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy support spaces! Watch this space! We will not only have some exciting on site therapy spaces available from late September, but we are also investing a lot of time and resources in our staff - upskilling in the Cognitive and Mental Health spaces to better understand the people we support. Athough we are not a Mental health practice, this plays a significant role in being able to understand and 'walk in the shoes' of those we are advocating for. ... See MoreSee Less

We went to check out the new space at “We Rock The Spectrum” which is a safe play space for neurodiverse individuals looking for sensory input/ gross motor input in a space that is sensitive to triggers (noise, too many people etc).
Worth a visit, the owners seem to be really knowledgeable about hosting a space that is purpose fit for use for individuals from 6 months to adulthood.
There are accessible bathrooms, a quiet room, a seat with harness for the zip line for those who have challenges with trunk control and many options to suit a variety of functional needs

Ever wonder what allied health support estimates look like through the lens of a therapist?

We are often asked “how much it costs for service A, B…C”. We will always itemise the estimate of time based on the experience we have in providing an evidence based and high quality service, coupled with the information received in the referral which may or may not be reflective of how much support is needed.

As passionate practitioners, we take to heart the way we provide support and will always put the interests of the client/ participant first, which alot of the time is the “out of assessment” or “out of session” support - collaborating with the persons support team, gathering additional information, talking to support coordinators about the most appropriate approach to overcoming an issue- the list goes on.

Predicting what is under the tip of an iceberg can be challenging, and particularly in the NDIS space, it is difficult to compare the service of a therapist working in day a musculoskeletal clinic to one working in the community, the underside of the iceberg is often much broader.

Have you ever wondered what the “LH”, “RH” and “ambulant” signs mean when navigating an accessible toilet?

It’s intention is to provide the user information on the layout of the room so that they can understand how they can transfer and navigate the task within that space.

“LH” toilets refer to when the user needs to transfer TO the toilet from their left hand side.

“RH” toilets refer to when the user needs to transfer TO the toilet from their right hand side

“Ambulant” toilets refer to an outward opening door and having rails on both sides to enable a person who is walking to access the toilet.

Working every day supporting individuals who require asssiatance or a modified environment to access the toilet, this information can really make a difference.

However, there are still many barriers with public bathrooms with a vast lack of hoist and change table access in most cases making the logistics of community access a very challenging task.
Who would like to see more availability of spaces equipped with such capabilities?

What a busy few weeks! We have been a little quiet on the socials as we have been very busy prepping our team for some exciting projects in 2023 which we will share in due course 😉

We have also had a highly experienced OT from a rehab background join our team and 2 of our existing OT team step up into near full time roles.

You’ll also get to know our second Therapy Coordinator Margie, who will join Amy this month.

Busy start to 2023 😄 but a welcome one ❤️
